Grip Strength, Leg Strength & Longevity: Two Measurements That Tell Us More Than Most People Realize
Grip strength and leg strength are two simple measurements that reveal a lot about how well your body may age. Here's why they matter more than most people realize.

When people think about living longer, they usually think about things like cholesterol, blood pressure, body weight, nutrition, and cardiovascular health.
All of those matter.
But there are two physical abilities that deserve far more attention:
How strong your grip is.
And:
How strong your legs are.
Research consistently shows that muscular strength and physical function are associated with health outcomes as we age. Grip strength in particular has become a widely studied marker associated with disability, cardiovascular outcomes, and mortality risk.
Lower-body strength and function matter just as much practically because your legs determine whether you can stand, walk, climb stairs, maintain balance, recover from a stumble, and remain independent.
That doesn't mean having a strong grip magically makes you live longer.
It means something bigger:
Strength tells us something about the condition and resilience of the entire body.
Why Grip Strength Matters
Grip strength sounds almost too simple.
You squeeze a device called a handgrip dynamometer as hard as you can, and it measures the amount of force you're capable of producing.
But that simple test can provide valuable information about overall muscular strength and physical function.
Research has repeatedly found associations between lower grip strength and increased risk of poor health outcomes, including physical disability and earlier mortality.
Why would the strength of your hands tell us anything about longevity?
Because grip strength isn't really just about your hands.
It can reflect several things happening throughout your body:
- Overall muscular strength
- Muscle quality
- Nervous-system function
- Nutritional status
- Physical activity
- Frailty
- General physical function
So your grip becomes something of a window into your overall physical capacity.
Grip Strength Doesn't Cause Longevity
This distinction is extremely important.
If someone has weak grip strength, buying a hand gripper and squeezing it 500 times every day isn't necessarily going to add years to their life.
Grip strength is partly a marker of overall strength and health.
People who maintain more muscle, remain physically active, train consistently, and avoid severe frailty are also more likely to maintain their grip.
So the lesson isn't:
"Train your hands so you don't die."
The lesson is:
Maintain a strong, capable body — and don't ignore your grip.
Your Legs May Matter Even More for Independence
Now let's move down the body.
Your legs are responsible for something absolutely essential to longevity:
Movement.
Think about how many daily activities require lower-body strength.
- Getting out of a chair.
- Getting off the toilet.
- Climbing stairs.
- Getting into a vehicle.
- Carrying groceries.
- Walking across a parking lot.
- Getting off the ground.
- Catching yourself when you stumble.
Every one of those requires muscular strength and power.
When leg strength disappears, your world can start becoming smaller.
The Chair Test Tells Us a Lot
One simple way researchers and clinicians assess lower-body function is through different versions of the sit-to-stand test.
The concept is simple:
Can you repeatedly stand from a chair without using your arms?
That movement requires your quadriceps, glutes, hips, trunk, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular system to work together.
For a younger healthy person, standing from a chair doesn't seem impressive.
That's exactly the point.
We don't appreciate basic physical abilities until we begin losing them.
For an older adult, the ability to repeatedly stand from a chair can represent something much bigger:
Independence.
Strength Isn't the Only Thing — Power Matters Too
There's another piece of this conversation that doesn't get enough attention.
Muscular power.
Strength is your ability to produce force.
Power is your ability to produce that force quickly.
Imagine you trip over a curb.
You don't have five seconds to slowly produce force.
Your body has to respond immediately.
Your foot hits the ground.
Your leg produces force.
Your muscles stabilize your body.
Hopefully, you recover.
That's power.
And maintaining the ability to produce force quickly becomes increasingly important as we age.
Falls Change Lives
This is where lower-body training becomes about much more than having strong legs.
Falls are a major health concern among older adults.
A serious fall can lead to fractures, hospitalization, reduced mobility, fear of falling again, and loss of independence.
Then another problem begins.
Someone falls.
They become afraid to move.
So they move less.
They lose muscle.
They lose strength.
They lose balance.
And because they've become weaker, their future fall risk can increase.
It becomes a vicious cycle.
Strength training can help us attack that problem before it begins.
Muscle Is Your Physical Reserve
I've talked before about muscle being your body's armor.
This is another example.
Think of strength like money in a savings account.
If everyday life requires a certain amount of strength and you barely have enough, you're operating close to your physical limit.
But if you've spent decades building strength?
You have a reserve.
Imagine two 70-year-olds need to stand up from the floor.
One person's maximum physical ability is barely enough to accomplish the task.
The other has spent years squatting, carrying, pulling, pushing, and training.
The task represents a much smaller percentage of their physical capacity.
That's reserve.
And reserve matters when life gets difficult.
What Happens When We Stop Strength Training?
Aging itself isn't the only issue.
Inactivity accelerates the problem.
Adults tend to lose muscle mass, strength, and power as they age, particularly when they aren't physically active.
Eventually, severe age-related losses can contribute to sarcopenia — a condition involving low muscle strength and reduced muscle quantity or quality.
The problem isn't simply looking smaller.
It can mean becoming less capable.
Walking becomes harder.
Stairs become harder.
Standing becomes harder.
Balance can suffer.
Falls become more consequential.
Everyday activities require a greater percentage of your available strength.
That's why I don't believe strength training becomes optional as we get older.
It becomes increasingly valuable.
Train Your Grip Without Training "Grip"
Here's the good news.
You don't necessarily need an entire grip workout.
Many traditional strength exercises naturally challenge your grip.
- Deadlifts.
- Farmer's carries.
- Suitcase carries.
- Pull-ups.
- Chin-ups.
- Rows.
- Kettlebell swings.
- Kettlebell cleans.
- Heavy dumbbell work.
Simply holding heavy objects forces your hands and forearms to produce force.
One of my favorites is extremely simple:
Pick something heavy up and carry it.
That's about as functional as strength training gets.
Train Your Legs for Life
The same philosophy applies to your lower body.
You don't need complicated exercises.
Build strength around basic human movement patterns.
Squat.
Hinge.
Lunge.
Step.
Carry.
Push.
Pull.
Exercises like squats, deadlifts, step-ups, split squats, lunges, sled pushes, and loaded carries develop qualities that translate directly into everyday physical capacity.
And as appropriate for the individual, training should eventually involve not only strength but also balance and power.
The goal isn't simply stronger legs.
It's maintaining the ability to use those legs.
Can You Pass These Tests at 70?
Here's a different way to think about your training.
Instead of asking what you want your body to look like next summer, ask what you want your body to be capable of decades from now.
At 70, 75, or 80, can you:
- Stand from a chair without pushing yourself up with your hands?
- Walk up a flight of stairs?
- Carry your groceries?
- Get yourself off the floor?
- Pick something heavy up safely?
- Walk at a good pace?
- Catch yourself if you stumble?
- Carry your own luggage through an airport?
- Open a stubborn jar?
- Play with your grandchildren?
Those aren't bodybuilding goals.
Those are independence goals.
Stop Training Only for the Mirror
This is why I want people to rethink what fitness actually means.
Yes, you can train because you want bigger arms.
You can train because you want your clothes to fit differently.
You can train because you want to lose body fat.
There's nothing wrong with those goals.
But there's a much bigger reason to become strong.
One day you're going to need that strength.
The squat you're doing at 40 isn't only about your legs today.
It's an investment in your ability to stand independently at 75.
The farmer's carry you're doing today isn't just a forearm exercise.
You're maintaining your ability to hold, carry, and control objects later in life.
Your training today is building capacity for a body you're going to live in decades from now.

Because longevity shouldn't simply mean being alive longer.
The goal should be extending the number of years you can actually live independently and do the things you want to do.
That's the difference between lifespan and healthspan.
Don't wait until you're 70 to start worrying about the strength you'll need at 70.
Build it at 30.
Protect it at 40.
Fight to keep it at 50.
Continue training it at 60.
And use it at 70, 80, and beyond.
The goal isn't simply to add years to your life.
Build a body capable of living those years.
